In a surprise turn of events, Pope Francis gave brief Easter greetings last Sunday and rode through the crowd in Vatican City, stopping to bless a child and greet faithful Catholics. That was to be his very last public appearance in this world. His last official visit was a brief chat with Vice President JD Vance this weekend.
Pope Francis later died of a stroke and related heart problems. Our world is now pope-less once again. Pope Francis is being called “The People’s Pope,” and his life will be remembered and celebrated this Saturday.
Life is relatively short compared to eternity. Psalms 90:70 says, “The length of our days is 70 years – or 80, if we have the strength; yet their span is but trouble and sorrow, for they quickly pass, and we fly away.” Now you know where that famous gospel hymn title must have come from! Pope Francis was blessed with 88 years, well beyond God’s promise for life on earth.
I noted on Resurrection Sunday that only one world leader has “resurrection credentials” – Jesus Christ! Muhammad is dead. Buddha is dead. Confucius is dead. Lenin is dead. Marx is dead. Even Father Abraham died in this life, and now the pope is dead. We can’t rely on any of these to save us but one: our Lord Jesus Christ. As our church marquee now reads, “He said it and he did it. Jesus is alive!” We may be pope-less but we’re not hopeless. Jesus Christ is our blessed hope!
I called a business on Friday, Good Friday, and discovered they were closed for the day. I left my message and reminded them the “We were open for Good Friday and Easter, too!” BTW, we’re open this Sunday, too! Hope to see ALL the faithful Willow View family back here this Sunday.
Yours in Christ’s love,
Pastor Mark
PS: We had wonderful Holy Week worship services last week. Thanks to all who planned, supported and participated in Maundy Thursday lunch and communion, Good Friday, the Holy Saturday Gospels reading event and all three Easter Sunday worship services. Jesus is alive at Willow View! Bless you and yours.
