Were you in worship last Sunday? If you were, you experienced a “reverse offering” – I may have just coined a new phrase! We received our traditional offering and at the close of my message I invited the ushers to come forward again. I’m sure that created some tension for many, though relief was soon to come. Instead of receiving another offering, we passed the plate with quarters and invited everyone to take one. Did you tell your friends they were giving away money last Sunday at Willow View? I’m telling you, it doesn’t pay to miss church! Why quarters? It's a reference back to Jesus’ words in Luke 20:20-26.
It's tax season. Apparently taxes have been around for quite some time. Jesus was asked, “Is it right for us to pay taxes to Caesar or not?” He saw their duplicity (those trying to trick him) and said to them, “Show me a denarius. Whose portrait and inscription are on it?” “Caesar’s,” they replied. He said to them, “Then give to Caesar what is Caesar’s, and to God what is God’s.” We looked at our quarters and saw George Washington’s portrait and the inscription, “In God We Trust.” Washington will get its share of our income – anywhere from 10% to 37%, depending on your income – this April 18. Will God get his fair share? Many of you are saying “yes.” We had a good response to our 2023 stewardship emphasis last Sunday. If you were absent or are yet to complete your commitment card for this year, please bring it with you this Sunday to be added to your fellow Willow View family’s responses. We know we can give without loving, but we can’t love without giving. The Lord is working at Willow View!
I’m excited about a new Lenten Bible study beginning Wednesday, March 1. It’s called “When God Speaks,” written by Henry and Richard Blackaby of Experiencing God fame. It’s a six-week study focusing on this essential need in each of our lives – hearing the Lord speak and responding to His voice. We’ll meet from 6:00 to 7:15 p.m. Books are available for $10 each. Come be blessed and challenged!
Yours in Christ’s Love,
Pastor Mark
PS: Our Ash Wednesday service is Wednesday, Feb. 22, at 6 p.m. in the sanctuary for our entire church family and friends.
