Last week Robin and I were visiting our grandson Julian and his parents Matt and Allie in Missoula, Montana. It happened to be over the time of Monday’s eclipse here in North America. Some people had been planning to see the eclipse for many years and made travel plans to be in the cities along the Path of Totality including some Oklahoma towns in the Southeast. We hadn’t thought much about it. I heard several of you were able to see much of a partial eclipse – we saw nothing in Montana but beautiful mountains surrounding us! I understand there will be another opportunity in 20 years in North America. Jim Ross told Pat to save their special sunglasses for the next one!
I wonder why there was so much hype about the solar eclipse. Live broadcasts. Interviews. Weather reports. Livestreaming along the Path of Totality. Maybe because it does happen that often for us in North America or the path was so long that many had the opportunity to experience it. I think that might be a key word- experience. We all love varied experiences and certainly this was a unique one for between 4-5 minutes. I mentioned to a family member that it was impressive to watch -if only on television or a computer- but it was nothing compared to the day Jesus died. Do you remember how long the “sun went dark” that day? Matthew records this, “From the sixth hour until the ninth hour darkness came over all the land.”- Matthew 27:45. That’s from high noon to 3:00PM. Can you imagine that? Three full hours. In the day there was no news coverage, no predictions, no indication how long it would last.
It must have been terrifying! What’s going on? How long will it last? Will it ever end? The temperature got cooler, the birds got quieter, and fear took over for many people. We all want to know the future but none of us can predict it accurately- only God. We don’t know what the future holds, but as Christians, we know Who holds the future. Jesus is already there. “Do not fear for I am with you. Do not look anxiously about you, for I am your God. I will strengthen you; I will help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” – Isaiah 41:10. See you this Sunday as Ben West shares about his recent car accident and his ongoing ministry in Peru and China too!
Yours in Christ’s love,
Pastor Mark
PS: Thanks to Pastor Scott for bringing The Word last Sunday – no matter what shoes you were wearing.
