Our Fall Festival is Oct. 31

By Pastor Mark McAdow
I’m not a big “Halloween” guy. In fact, it’s my least favorite time of the year. I can’t wait for all the skeletons, ghosts, tombstones, witches with black hats, spiders and their webs, and a menacing dragon in our neighborhood to be taken down and Thanksgiving decorations to take over. That’s why I’m so very thankful for our Fall Festival as a safe and positive alternative to Halloween. It originally was “All Hallows Eve” – the night before All Saints Day on Nov. 1, when Christians celebrated the lives of the great saints of old!

Pastor Jeffery Raker writes, “Halloween is the highest holy day for various pagan religions and satanic cults. Its roots lie with the ancient Druids, who worshipped Samhain, god of the dead, whom they believed called the souls of evil men out of the grave to play “tricks” on people. Villagers wearing masks to disguise themselves from the evil spirits collected food for the celebration. If you gave, you were promised good (luck). If not, a “trick.”

The custom of Halloween was brought to America in the 1840’s by Irish immigrants fleeing their country’s potato famine. At that time; the favorite pranks in New England included tipping over outhouses and unhinging fence gates.

It is a night associated with darkness, evil, and death; but we’re seeking to redeem it by spreading God’s light here in Enid! I hope you will be present tonight as we welcome kids and families into our church to share Christ’s love with them. We’ll provide inflatables, games to play and lots of candy and canned pop to add to the fun too! You’ll note Scripture themed games and Halloween gospel tracts, too. There are still opportunities to volunteer tonight to work a simple game and/or help with clean-up too. Please pray for this outreach event. Thanks for ALL you do for Jesus. It’s an immense joy to serve Him together. After all, He is the light of the world!

Wasn’t last Sunday amazing?!  Thanks again to Tom Stanberry, Mark Polum, and Lois Tilley for sharing their life-changing stories in worship with us. The Lord is at work in the lives of His people right here at Willow View. Do you have a story to tell? I’m always glad to hear what the Lord is doing in your life.
This Sunday, Nov. 3, is Holy Communion. Don’t miss the opportunity to repent of your sin and receive the Lord’s forgiveness in full. (I John 1:9).

See you tonight and this Sunday morning, too!

Yours in Christ,
Pastor Mark
