WIJD?

By Pastor Mark McAdow
Do you remember the bracelets that were so popular several years ago? They had a simple four-letter message with a question mark: WWJD? It didn’t spell out a word, but it did ask a very pertinent question, especially when you had a choice to make. Of course, the implied question was this, “What would Jesus Do?” based on the book by Charles Sheldon, In His Steps. It is one of the best-selling books of all time. Do you know when it was written? 1896!

As we approach the “holiest” of weeks all year long, we will be taking a journey once again “In His Steps” — the steps of Jesus Christ. As I like to say, “Jesus is the only man who divided world history” (BC/AD), and He can divide ours as well. This Sunday is Palm Sunday when we recall His triumphant entrance into Jerusalem to celebrate Passover, fulfilling Bible prophecy by the prophet, found in Jeremiah 9:9, “Say to the Daughter of Zion, ‘See, your king comes to you, gentle and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey.’”

Holy Week is our distinct opportunity to “walk with Jesus” in those last days of His life here on earth. We’ve prepared several worship experiences to enhance your remembrance and celebration on His passion, death and resurrection on Easter Sunday morning. Please make special note on your calendar and plan to join us for every event you can.

You will receive a postcard reminder in the mail this week and we have several extra copies on hand in the Welcome Center for you to take and invite a friend or neighbor this weekend. Who knows, your invitation may be the only one they receive! We’re not responsible for their response, but to simply to extend the invitation as Jesus said, “Come and See.”

Join us for homemade vegetable soup next Thursday, April 17, at our Maundy Thursday free luncheon from noon to 12:45 p.m. We’ll sing a few hymns, have a brief devotion, eat and celebrate Holy Communion with traditional Matza crackers in a special setting. We’ll gather again on Good Friday, April 18, at 7 p.m. for a quiet remembrance of Jesus’ sacrificial death on the cross to pay for our sins with his very life.

On Holy Saturday, April 19, we’ll read all four gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke and John) from the pulpit in our sanctuary in 15-minute segments — something new at Willow View! You can sign up this Sunday.

Our Easter celebration begins with our 7 a.m. sunrise service outside at our crosses with Pastor Scott leading, followed by breakfast inside prepared by Truman Landwehr and crew. We’ll continue in worship at 9 and 11 a.m. with Discipleship Communities/Sunday School between services at 10:10. What a wonderful day to be a Christian and invite others to be, too!

See you this Sunday as we wave palm branches and our children sing a special Palm Sunday song. Our Easter egg hunt is from 10:10 to 10:45 a.m. this Sunday for all of our children, too!

Yours in Christ,
Pastor Mark

Oh, yes, what does WIJD mean? “What Is Jesus Doing?” After all, He’s still alive today!
