You’ve heard the phrase before and you’ve used it, too: “There’s no such thing as a free lunch.”
What does that mean? There must be a “catch” when offered something “free.” Not always! Monday, I had a doctor’s appointment that left time for only a quick lunch. I ran into Freddy’s Frozen Custard to grab a quick burger and fries (to my new doctor’s chagrin), but it was close by. As I opened the door, a construction worker wearing a company shirt attempted to hold the door for me, but I instead said, “No, after you, my friend.” He went up to the counter and turned to see if I knew what I wanted. I said “yes,” and he said you can go ahead of me. Again, I tried to let him go first but he wouldn’t. Right after I ordered he said to the cashier, “I’m getting his.” I tried to tell him that wasn’t necessary, but he insisted!”
We both waited for order No. 129 and he sat at a booth across the room, and I waved him down to eat with me. I said, “If a guy buys my lunch, I should at least get to visit with him over it.” I asked to pray over our lunch, and I had a few minutes to get to know Chad and hear some of his story. He’s currently working on the renovation crew at the Walmart Neighborhood Market. He’s from the Marlow/Duncan area and a Methodist, too.
Isn’t God good? On the way out, he asked if I would pray for him. I said “sure,” and we sat at the outside table and I asked him what I could pray for him. He said “family” and I asked what specifically. He seemed surprised and said “health and relationships.” So I prayed.
We were both blessed by the chance encounter at Freddy’s, or was it really chance? Do you believe in “divine appointments?" I do. Maybe the Lord arranged that lunch meeting for His purposes in each of our lives! I went to Lunch Bunch today and Sharla found out there are free lunches, too.
Two weeks from today is Maundy Thursday. We’re serving a free lunch from noon to 12:45 with Holy Communion, too. I hope you will plan to join us for a light lunch and time of worship and devotion together. You may just want to invite a friend as well.
Looking forward to seeing you again this Sunday. Come early and get a good seat. Easter is just two weeks away!
Yours in Christ,
Pastor Mark
PS: The First Friday’s Men’s Breakfast is tomorrow morning at 7:00. We Methodists love to eat and share life together.
