Happy New Year!

Wait a minute! What happened to Advent and Christmas?  They are coming –very soon!  In fact this Sunday December 3rd begins the Season of Advent.  Advent comes from the Latin term meaning “coming,” so this is a time of preparation.  Preparation to celebrate the first coming of Christ into our world and to anticipate His Second Coming too!  It’s also been called “Winter Lent” –just as Easter has a designated time of preparation so does Christmas.  It includes the four Sundays leading up to Christmas Day!  This Sunday we will light the first candle on The Advent Wreath and give opportunity for you to light a votive candle during our Prayer Time, if you like.

Advent is a time to prepare our hearts to receive Jesus Christ in a fresh way. In my prayers, I often find myself asking the Lord to reveal Himself in new ways, renew my spirit and revive my heart.  Jesus is the reason for this season.  Amid all the decorating, baking, card writing, shopping, wrapping, and mailing don’t miss the One reason we celebrate Christmas at all- Jesus!

He is the Author and Perfecter of our faith (Hebrews 12:2)!

This Sunday we enter into the journey of Advent and challenge ourselves not to lose sight of the Guest of Honor –Jesus! Many people of Jesus’ Day missed Him including:  King Herod, The High Priest, local Roman officials and scores of common people.  If we’re not careful, we too can miss Him even today.

We’re challenged to seek Christ this Advent as the Wise men did in their day –deliberately, passionately and relentlessly! They were single-focused in their pursuit of the Messiah –may we be as well.  Though many people missed Jesus who weren’t looking for Him, there’s good news for everyone who did!  Pastor Max Lucado says, “The ratio between those who sought Him and those who found Him was one-to-one. All who sought Him, found Him. Long before the words were written, this promise was proven:  ‘God rewards those who diligently seek Him” –(Hebrews 11:6).

Wise men still seek Him and wise women as well! Come join us this Sunday as I begin our Advent Series:  The Gift!  This week’s message is “Christmas is for Kids!” from Mark 10:13-16.

Let’s seek Him together – every Sunday –this Advent Season!

Yours in Christ’s Great Love,

Pastor Mark

PS – We’re hosting a new Advent Prayer time on the Sundays of Advent from 8:40-8:55AM in the Parlor. You’re welcomed to come and join us as we pray for God’s Holy Spirit to lead us closer to Jesus!

PSS – We also have a gift for you this Sunday to encourage your pursuit of Christ this Advent!
